Concrete Estimate Template: Flatwork, Footings, Overage
How many yards? That is the only question most concrete estimates answer well, and it is the cheapest one to get wrong. A concrete estimate template that prices the mix and stops there leaves out where the money actually goes: the access, the subgrade, the overage, and a finish crew standing in a driveway at 6 a.m. waiting on a truck that cannot get to the pour.
Order 4 to 10 percent over the plan number, and show it on the bid
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association tells purchasers to order 4 to 10 percent more concrete than the plan dimensions calculate, and that overage belongs on your estimate as a visible line rather than buried inside a square-foot price. Formwork bows. Subgrade is never as flat as the plan drew it, and a half inch of dish across a 900 square foot slab is close to a yard and a half of concrete nobody priced. Spillage happens on every single pour. What makes this urgent is that the math runs one direction only: leftover concrete costs you the yardage, while coming up short mid-pour costs you a cold joint, a second load with its own charge, and a finish crew on the clock watching a truck drive back to the plant. NRMCA guidance also warns against ordering small clean-up loads, which is exactly what a thin estimate forces you into.
Showing the overage as its own line does something else worth more than the yardage. It tells a homeowner comparing three bids that you have poured concrete before, because the guy who calculated 12.0 yards off the plan and wrote 12.0 yards on the estimate has told them he has not.
Flatwork and footings are two different estimating problems
A driveway and a footing trench get lumped into the same bid all the time, and they behave nothing alike once the excavator shows up. Flatwork is a surface problem: the number is driven by area, thickness, and finish, and the labor peak lands after the pour when a crew is chasing a finish window that the weather gets to decide. Footings are a volume and excavation problem: the number is driven by linear feet, width, and depth, and the labor peak lands before the pour, in layout and forming. The yardage risk sits in different places too. Flatwork loses concrete to subgrade dish and thickened edges. Footings lose it to over-excavation, soft spots, and a trench wall that sloughs in overnight. One estimate line cannot carry both risks, because the contingency each one needs is a different size.

What belongs on a concrete estimate template
A concrete estimate template earns its keep by separating the pour from everything that has to happen around the pour. At minimum it carries: site access and conveyance, demolition and disposal of any existing slab, excavation and subgrade prep with base rock called out by depth, forming, reinforcement, the concrete itself with yardage and stated overage, placement method, finish type, control joints and curing or sealer, cleanup, and plain exclusions. That last one is not filler. Concrete bids die on assumptions about who moves the fence panel and who hauls the broken slab. Notice that the mix is one line out of eleven. When a client asks you to sharpen the price, the separation is what lets you point at conveyance or finish instead of shaving the only line that cannot be shaved, and it turns a mid-job discovery into a documented change order rather than an argument in a driveway.
The tear-out line is the one most concrete bids leave empty. Breaking and cutting an existing slab pulls you under the OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard, which caps exposure at 50 micrograms per cubic meter as an 8-hour average and requires a handheld saw to have an integrated water delivery system feeding the blade. Water, blades, and disposal priced by weight are real dollars, and they belong on the estimate under demolition instead of inside your head.

The pour day is a line item, not a favor
Access is the single most expensive thing a concrete estimate can ignore, because a loaded ready-mix truck weighs roughly 80,000 pounds and, as NRMCA puts it plainly, may not be able to maneuver on loose dirt or over residential curbs and pathways. Truck mixers carry 8 to 12 cubic yards. If yours cannot reach the forms, the concrete still has to get there, and a pump, a buggy, or four hours of wheelbarrow work is the difference between a good day and a job you finish out of obligation. There is a clock on it too. The producer is responsible for the specified slump for 30 minutes after the requested time or after the truck arrives, whichever is later. Past that window, a crew that is not ready is your problem, not the plant's.
A concrete contractor outside Sacramento told us he bid a 900 square foot patio at $9,800 and was already down $1,100 before the first yard hit the forms. The side gate was 34 inches wide, the truck could not reach the back yard, and he called for a pump the morning of the pour at full rate. He had walked that yard. He just had not written anything down about it.

Building the estimate while standing in the yard beats reconstructing the yard from memory.
Your yardage price is not what changed this year
Concrete contractors re-price the mix every spring and leave labor exactly where it was, which is backwards heading into the back half of the 2026 pour season. Per AGC's compilation of BLS producer price index data, ready-mixed concrete fell 0.5 percent over the 12 months ending January 2026, even though it sits 36.6 percent above where it was in February 2020. The base rock under your slab tells a different story: construction sand, gravel, and crushed stone rose 4.8 percent over that same year and is up 51.3 percent since 2020. Construction wages and salaries climbed 4.3 percent in the year through Q4 2025. The spike already happened, and it did not happen where you keep looking.
Here is the position that will annoy a fair number of contractors: a per-square-foot price is a marketing number, not an estimate. It is fine on a yard sign and useful for a homeowner sizing up a project online, but the moment it becomes how you bid, every access problem, every soft subgrade, and every 3-yard clean-up load gets averaged into a rate built from a job that had none of them. Build the number from the components, then divide by square footage at the end if the client wants that comparison. Working the other direction is how a busy season ends flat.

Three questions for your supplier this week
Call your ready-mix plant this week and ask three things: the minimum load, the short-load charge under that minimum, and how long past the requested time the slump stays their responsibility. Write the three numbers on a card and tape it inside the job binder. None of that requires software and all three land on the next bid you write. Most of the concrete contractors we work with have never asked the third question, and it is the one that decides who eats a stalled pour.
The pour season runs hot through October across most of the country, which means the next twelve weeks will generate more bids than the rest of your year put together. Whatever your estimate leaves off right now, you are going to leave it off about forty more times before the ground freezes.
